Match Report

Bolton won the Cup and ended a Wembley tradition -for the first time the previous year's beaten finalists had returned to Wembley and lost again. They were undoubtedly the better side on the day and their play was more imaginative, balanced, and carrying more punch than that of their opponents. Yet, for a tragic reason, this will always be Manchester United's Final. Three months earlier, with United already through to the fifth round, the team had been decimated by the Munich crash.

United had four crash survivors in their Wembley line-up and were first on the attack. It was Bolton, though, who snatched the lead after only two minutes, with Lofthouse's close range effort.

The United defence held on as Bolton were quick to try to ram home their advantage. Gregg saved superbly from Lofthouse and Birch, and Cope was a tower of strength at centre-half. There was always a chance that one of Bobby Charlton's flashing shots would bring them level, though the rest of the United attack seemed more inclined to play across the field than down it.

Three minutes after Charlton had struck a post, the game was finally lost for United as Bolton scored a controversial second goal. From Stevens's hard shot, Gregg pushed the ball into the air, and Lofthouse moved forward to charge both goalkeeper and ball over the line.
