MATCH REPORT

Andy Linighan headed Arsenal's winner against Sheffield Wednesday with less than a minute of extra‑time left in the 1993 final replay ‑ a goal which spared the Cup the indignity of its first penalty shoot‑out at Wembley. Defender Linighan rose high to a corner by Paul Merson, a theatrical last act on a night of glistening puddles, to give Arsenal the distinction of being the first club to win both FA Cup and League Cup in one season. Wednesday were their opponents in both finals.

Both FA Cup semi‑finals were staged at Wembley, so Arsenal and Wednesday each played there four times in six weeks ‑ FA Cup semifinal, League Cup final, FA Cup final and replay. Perhaps familiarity with each other, and even with the stadium, were among the reasons why the four hours of the longest final of all were so greyly ordinary. The replay attracted the smallest crowd (62,267) for an FA Cup final at Wembley. The kick‑off was put back half an hour because an accident on the M 1 had halted thousands of Wednesday fans. It was the first time a Wembley kick‑off had been delayed since the White Horse final.
