MATCH REPORT

Liverpool's League and Cup double... Merseyside's Wembley... and, in its own special way, a blessing for English football. An excellent final in front of an audience that was mixed and mellow yet divided and passionate as only a Merseyside crowd could have been. Hooliganism, Europe believed, was an English disease, but there was no sign of contagion here.

It was the first all‑Mersey FA Cup final and its timing was perfect. Liverpool were the new 1986 League champions; Everton were the runners‑up and 1985 champions. Everton were playing in their third successive final, Liverpool in the first of three in four years.

Merseyside turned its back on the rest of football and produced a final that looked to be going Everton's way for nearly an hour, but which Liverpool then hijacked and eventually dominated. Two goals by lan Rush of Wales made all the difference.

Liverpool's double was the third of the century and the fifth in all, a triumph for Kenny Dalglish in his first season as Liverpool's player manager.
