MATCH REPORT

Manchester City lived up to their reputation for skilful attacking football, Leicester rose above the standard implied by their twenty‑first position in the First Division, and between them they produced an open and exciting Final. Both sides took risks and missed chances, and the match was settled by a single goal scored by Manchester City's Neil Young in the first half.

Poor Leicester ‑ it was their third Final of the decade and they lost all three. But Manchester's narrow win was well‑deserved because they were the better organized, their attacks built from depth, and they relied less on the ability of outstanding individuals.

Clarke had an outstanding game for Leicester and came close to scoring in his first characteristic burst. After a fast dribble along the eighteen‑yard line he let go a hard drive to the top right‑hand corner for Dowd to tip it spectacularly round the post.

Sliding desperately in towards goal, Leicester full‑back Rodrigues sliced wide from two yards out. Three minutes later Manchester scored. Summerbee survived tackles from Nish and Woollett by the dead‑ball line on the right and sent a low, firm pass back to Young, who shot high into the net past Shilton from near the penalty‑spot. Leicester continued to look dangerous in attack after the break, but the equalizer wouldn't come.
