MATCH REPORT

Through the first ninety minutes of this match Everton were the better organized and showed more aggression, but Albion took their chance in extra time and a Final dominated by cautious defence was settled by Astle's ninety‑third minute goal.

In a depressing first half littered with trips, body‑checks and sliding tackles, there were still moments of tension. Lovett was too slow to take advantage of a chance in front of the Everton goal, Husband's hasty shot for Everton went just wide and the tireless Ball set up shots for Kendall and Morrissey which almost counted.

Everton's best period came in the middle of the second half. Kaye was forced to head Royle's effort off the line with Osborne beaten, and Ball got in the way when Royle might have scored with a header. Albion's defence held out, and they improvised some swift counter‑attacks.

Everton had their great chance with five minutes to go, but Husband, standing unmarked only six yards out, headed Morrissey's centre over the top.

An Astle double‑strike in the first period of extra time won the match for Albion. His first attempt, right‑footed, rebounded from Harvey, and he hit a second shot instantly and precisely with his left foot into the top corner. Astle had scored in every round, and Albion had equalled Newcastle's record of appearing in ten Finals.
