MATCH REPORT

This Final will be remembered, along with the 'Matthews Final' of 1953, for a dramatic recovery by an apparently beaten team. In a match of extremes of elation and disappointment, and an exciting contrast of styles, Everton scored three times in sixteen minutes to win 3‑2 after being two goals in arrears with two‑thirds of the game gone.

A supporter is collared by the police and lectured by Brian Labone. Brian Harris tries on a police hat.

Trebilcock scores one of his two goals

Wednesday, underrated in advance, dictated the tempo in the first half and had the boost of an early goal. McCalliog's slightly mistimed shot from Ford's square pass was deflected past West into the net after only four minutes.

Everton might have had a penalty when Springett seemed to bring down Young, and just after half‑time Springett made a superb one‑handed save from the same player's hard, knee‑high shot.

Five minutes later Wednesday were two up through Ford, and they were now calmly and authoritatively in control. Then a young Cornishman, Trebilcock, playing in only his second Cup match, changed the pattern of the game with a brace of goals inside five minutes. Now, with the scores level, it was the Everton style that seemed more appropriate to the occasion.

Harry Catterick cannot watch the closing minutes!

Wednesday half‑back Young failed to control a bouncing ball in midfield, and immediately Temple was racing away towards goal with the ball at his feet, swerving slightly before driving the ball past Springett as he came out.
