MATCH REPORT

Defeat, after being level or in front for all but ninety seconds of the match: that was Preston's fate in the 1964 Final. These Second Division outsiders had moved into the game with all the confidence of tradition and injured pride, and may ultimately be regarded as one of Wembley's unluckiest losers in a great Final.

Preston were ahead in nine minutes. Standen failed to hold Dawson's low shot and Hoiden ran the ball in.

In the 1954 Final Preston had wiped out a West Bromwich goal within a minute. History repeated itself ten years later, but with a change in the order, as the 'Hammers' winger Sissons became the youngest scorer in a Final when he hit home an angled shot a minute later.

Dawson lurched forward to score with a powerful header from Wilson's corner, to put Preston into the lead again five minutes from half‑time. They held it for twelve minutes until Hurst got his head to Brabrook's corner and the ball rolled over the line after hitting both crossbar and prostrate goalkeeper.

The scores were even now, but as the second half developed West Ham strengthened. It was as late as two minutes into injury time when they finally clinched it. Boyce ran in unchallenged to head Brabrook's lofted cross from the right firmly past Kelly's left hand and thereby crown a fine afternoon's work.

Dawson, Preston's Centre-Forward heads the second goal.

Boyce's last minute goal wins the cup for West ham.
