MATCH REPORT

Arsenal, at this period, were regularly called upon to supply at least half the England side. Most of the old guard were still there, though David Jack had hung up his boots, and now they had the free‑scoring Drake at centre forward.

Arsenal's opponents in 1936 were Sheffield United from the Second Division. They made Arsenal fight all the way that afternoon.  Sheffield's strength was in attack, and in Barclay and Pickering they had two of the most constructive inside‑forwards of the day. Dodds, a free transfer signing from Huddersfield, was the discovery of the season at centre‑forward.

Smith, in Sheffield United's goal kept the core to 1-0

Arsenal were slow to settle down, but their attack came more into the picture after twenty minutes play. Bastin and Hulme, the latter appearing in his fourth Final and still as speedy as ever, began to put the Sheffield defence under pressure. It was only with a quarter of an hour left that Drake, playing with a heavily strapped knee, took a pass from Bastin and shot home a left‑foot thunderbolt for the only goal of the match.

Sheffield twice came near to equalizing. Almost immediately after Drake's goal, Dodds hit the bar, and then Pickering ballooned his shot over from a good position.
