MATCH REPORT

For some seasons now Wednesday had done well in the League ‑ they were champions in 1929 and 1930 ‑ and in the year of their Final against the Albion they were lying in third position. Albion, for their part, were appearing in their eighth Final, and came to Wembley with nine of the players who had beaten Birmingham in 1931. The scene was set for a great fight.

Five minutes from time the score was 2‑2. Up to that moment it had been attack and counter‑attack all the way, at an astonishing pace, with Albion twice forcing equalizers.

The Wednesday forwards were soon in gear and playing brilliant football against a harassed Albion defence which seemed powerless when Starling, Surtees and Palethorpe worked the ball between them for Palethorpe to shoot Wednesday into a second‑minute lead. But before half‑time, with Albion beginning to find their Wembley feet, they drew level when Boyes, the outside‑left, took a pass from the limping Carter and raced half the length of the field before slashing a rising shot into the Wednesday net. It was one of the finest goals seen at Wembley.

Sheffield were now beginning to have more of the play, and twenty minutes from time Hooper, moving in from the right wing, took an intelligent pass from Starling and netted with a snap shot which went in off a post. Cock‑a‑hoop Wednesday were 2‑1 up.

With only a quarter of an hour left Sandford shot home from twenty yards and Albion were level once more. Five agonizing minutes left and then, surely, an extra half‑hour. Soon after Richardson's glaring miss for Albion, Rimmer, the Wednesday outside‑left, chased a long bouncing pass down the centre into the Albion penalty‑area. Pearson came smartly out of his goal, but Rimmer's head beat him to the ball by a whisker, and Wednesday were ahead for the third time in the match. Rimmer had set a record by scoring in every round.

Almost at once Rimmer scored again, and, with that, Albion's fighting spirit vanished. Except, that is, for centre‑forward Billy Richardson, who retrieved the ball which the frustrated Pearson had just kicked into the net again and then dashed back to the centre‑spot and kicked‑off. But only thirty seconds remained, and Richardson's gesture had been heroic but futile.
