MATCH REPORT
|
At the time of their Final against
Manchester City, Everton were at their very best. Promoted to the First
Division in 1931 and League champions in the following year, they were
now Cup‑winners for the second time.

Dean scores. Note the number 22, the first final where
numbers were worn |
Everton's Cresswell had won his first
England cap as far back as 1921, and yet still managed to stroll through
the hardest match. Dean was a great centre‑forward ‑ his haul of sixty
goals in the First Division in the 1927‑8 season still stands as a
League record.

Everton took control after City's
opening series of attacks, and goals by Stein, Dean and Dunn gave them a
victory that was emphatic and undisputed in a Final notably uneventful,
judged by normal Wembley standards. Two of Everton's goals were the
result of misjudgement on the part of City's goalkeeper Langford, who
had kept too close to his line and failed to cut out most of the crosses
to the immortal 'Dixie', but there were no sensations this year, no
sudden twist or hectic finish.
For the first time the players 'shirts
were numbered from 1 to 22 ‑and City were the high‑numbered also‑rans.
