MATCH REPORT

Blackburn were hardly expected to beat Huddersfield, lying second in the League to Newcastle and demolishing all opposition in the earlier ties with one six‑ and two four‑goal victories. A side that eventually avoided relegation by only three points could surely not stop Huddersfield's tremendous forward‑line of five internationals.

Roscamp scoring for Blackburn Rovers with 60 seconds gone.

But Blackburn, too, could boast their internationals: the full‑back pair, Hutton and Jones; wing‑halves, Healless and Campbell; Puddefoot and Rigby in attack. And they had knocked out both Newcastle and Arsenal en route to the Final.

Huddersfield never recovered from Roscamp's goal for Blackburn within the first thirty seconds ‑ the fastest goal in a Wembley Final, and before half‑time McLean had sent a skimming shot into the goal to add to Blackburn's lead. Blackburn's play was showing a relentless determination that wore down Huddersfield's famous forward‑line.

Tommy McLean scores Blackburn's Second Goal

Alex Jackson, switched from the wing into the centre after the interval, gave Huddersfield a fighting chance by closing the gap with a fast shot that hit the underside of the bar on its way into the net. The goal was also significant for another reason: it was the first time both sides had scored in a Final since 1910.

Even Jackson, a player with a genius for snatching goals from unexpected positions, failed to save the Yorkshire side. Roscamp made matters safe with his second goal of the game, and Rovers won the Cup for the sixth time.
