MATCH REPORT

The year 1922 saw Preston take their place in the Final - the last at Stamford Bridge-for the first time since 1889. Their opponents, Huddersfield, were now heading for their great triumphs. They had some splendid players in Wadsworth and Smith, both England Internationals, and inside-left Clem Stephenson, who had already won Cup medals with Villa in 1913 and 1920.

The match itself was rough and undistinguished. In some way it was fitting that it should have been the first Final to be decided by a penalty-kick. Both sides were determined to stop each other at all costs, and the referee, for his part. was far too lenient with offenders.

Mr Fowler's penalty award was controversial. Huddersfield's outside-left, Billy Smith, had set off on a long dribble and was racing into the penalty-area when Hamilton, Preston's right-back, brought him down from behind. Despite the bespectacled Mitchell's efforts to distract the taker by jumping up and down on his line. Smith blasted the spot-kick into the net.

Was it a penalty? Smith had certainly fallen inside the area, but marks on the pitch suggested that the foul may have been committed outside.
