The year 1909 brought two newcomers to the Final, and, for once, the favourites won. Manchester United, League winners the previous season, had the greater experience and the boost of a victory over Newcastle in the semi-final.
United won a disappointing, rough gameāthe ninth Final to be decided by a solitary goal - with Turnbull's twenty-second minute effort. Only two players stood out for their skill: Wedlock, the great little Bristol City centre-half who won nineteen caps for England, and the legendary Billy Meredith, who added another winners' medal to the one he had gained with the other Manchester club in 1904.
Sandy Turnbull (Not in picture) about to turn the ball into the net after Halse's (2nd Right) shot comes back off th bar.
In the opening stages of the game Bristol set the pace, but United soon wore down their attack and began to assert themselves. A movement by the United right-wing pair left the inside-right Halse poised for a shot. The ball was struck firmly against the angle of crossbar and post. and 'Sandy' Turnbull hit an unstoppable drive into the net from the rebound.
The nearest Bristol came to emulating this was when Hardy, left un-marked in front of a goal after a fine bout of passing, had his hard shot turned aside in masterly fashion by a dive from Moger.
