MATCH REPORT

The 1892 Final was the last to be played at Kennington Oval and the first in which goal-nets were used. Five years earlier the two Midland rivals, Albion and Villa, had staged the first Final with a provincial 'local derby' atmosphere, and here they were together again.

Albion's form throughout the season had been inconsistent, and when Villa, semi-final conquerors of the great Sunderland team of 'all the talents', began the match in such good attacking form, it looked odds-on that Villa would win the Cup for the second time.

But there was a surprise in store for them. A sudden break and Bassett was sprinting down the right wing to centre perfectly for Geddes to shoot home. Albion, improbably, were in the lead.

In a subtle way the Albion half-backs, Groves, Perry and Reynolds, had been taking a grip on affairs in midfield. Before half-time another brilliant run by Bassett and another perfect centre gave Nicholls the chance to send Albion in with a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval. The match was virtually over. Villa's forwards continued to be frustrated in the second half, and Reynolds completed the rout near the end with a third Albion goal from a long shot.
