MATCH REPORT
|
Strange
though it may seem for all the tremendous feats performed by the Rovers
in the competition, it was Notts County who most people thought would
win the 1891 Final. Only a week before the Final, for example, County
had beaten the holders 7-1 in a League match at Blackburn. The writing
was surely on the wall.
Rovers,
however, proved to be quicker on the ball, played better as a team, and
their shooting was much more dangerous than County's. The defence seldom
put a foot wrong, and Dewar at centre-half played the game of his life.
Nine
minutes after the start Lofthouse's throw-in from near the corner-flag
led to Rovers' opening goal, probably scored by Dewar in a terrific
scramble for the ball. Thirteen minutes later Southworth put Rovers
further ahead, and Townley headed a third four minutes after that.
The
supremacy of the 'Blue and Whites' was not seriously challenged after
they had changed round, three goals to the good, though Oswald succeeded
in reducing the deficit with a goal for County in the seventy-first
minute.
By
their success. Blackburn equalled the record of the Wanderers team which
had won the Cup five times during the first seven years of its
existence.
