The
Etonians were a side with clever individuals, but Carthusians,
wonderfully linked together, convincingly won the last Final to be
played between amateur clubs from the south.
Carthusians
were the first Charterhouse team to enter the competition. and, led on
by Parry and Page, made a rapid succession of attacks on the Etonians'
goal. ably defended by Rawlinson.
After
half an hour's play, during which the Etonians had several times been
lucky not to concede a goal. Carthusians finally scored. Prinsep's
long throw was deflected by Wynyard into
the goal.
Wynyard 'scored'
again within a minute, charging
Rawlinson over the line with the ball, but, curiously,
the point was disallowed for offside.
The
heavier men in the light blue ranks began to tire midway through the
second half, and the Carthusians,
improving every minute, used quick and accurate passing to switch the
play to the opposite end. Rawlinson punched out Page's shot from
Prinsep's pass, but Parry followed up to make it 2-0. Almost directly
from the kick-off the ball was in the Etonians' goal again, Todd
heading through after Page's fine dribble.
The
spectators had cheered the winners from start to finish - clearly their
victory was a popular one. |
